Virginia Louise Thompson (1939-2024), beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin, passed away on January 23, 2024, at the age of 84. She was born on June 29, 1939, in Rock Hill, SC to the late John Brannon and Geneva Speller.
Shortly after getting married to Frank Thompson in 1956, they moved to Washington, DC. She became a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church and, later, First Baptist Church of Silver Spring in Silver Spring, Maryland. Virginia's favorite Bible scriptures were 1 Corinthians 14:40: "Let all things be done decently and in order" and "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth." Psalms 121:1-2.
Inspired by those verses, Virginia attended a special training program and became employed as a teacher's assistant at the Vista Volunteer Service. There, she helped instruct and prepare preschoolers in the HeadStart program before they entered kindergarten or first grade. Her next job was one that meant the most to her. She worked for The Jewish Council for the Aging and they became her second family. Virginia made the elders feel loved and sincerely cared for and would periodically take one of her children to work with her. It was a total joy for all concerned.
As a result, Virginia received several promotions and many letters of appreciation from the family members of the elders she cared for and from the company itself. In addition, Virginia's children, whom she loved dearly, learned many life lessons and skills by just observing how much the senior citizens would light up with excitement when they saw her. She was very thoughtful and engaging with the elderly clients.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Roy and Clenso Brannon, Dorothy Mae Powell, Jesse Jr, Johnnie Mae, and Kenny Robinson.
She leaves seven children to cherish the memories of her life: JoAnn (Mike) Hammond, Linda Thompson, Dyvar (Kina, Sr.) Anderson-Wright, Scarlett, Rickey, and Robert Anderson, and Tina Brannon.
She will be remembered by her twelve grandchildren: Lakeyia Thompson, Julius Gordon III, Letico and Lawrence Ellis Jr., Gabrielle, James, Jr., Theresa, and Vera Fonteneaux, Lauren and Chelsea McDaniel, Akora and Seth Anderson. Two brothers: Robert Earl and James Robinson.
Six great grandchildren: D'Amonte Finley, Maiha and Leah Thompson, Bria Wadley, Joshua, Jada, and Jaliyah Harrison, Carlos Williams, Julesia Stewart and Londyn Gordon, in addition to one great-great grandchild, Raleigh and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
