Thomas Ferguson, Jr. was born August 7, 1946 in Bronx, New York to the late Thomas and Sarah Frances Ferguson. On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, Thomas was called home to be with the Lord after a brief encounter with illness. On his sick bed, he rededicated his life to Christ. He would listen as we read scripture, prayed, and s un g a song or two… wanting to be sure he was ready whenever the Lord should call him.
Thomas known affectionately as Bro. Sonny, Papa, or Deacon relocated to Washington, DC at a young age and grew up in DC Public Schools. He was a graduate of Dunbar Senior High and was
a Team Captain in the Military Cadet. From there, he was employed as a Mail Handler at the US Printing Office where he retired after many years of service. In between this time, he joined the U.S. Army, answering the call at the time for service in the Viet Nam War.
As a young boy, the neighborhood Boy's Club was a favorite hangout spot where Thomas trained to "box" and won the The Golden Glove. He was known in the "hood" and nobody wanted to challenge him. He protected his sister and brother from others. When attacked, all they had to do was let it be known that Thomas Ferguson was their brother. Thomas would always come to their rescue.
Likewise, as an adult, he was always willing to lend a hand in any capacity to family and friends. He was very kind, always funny and loved to make you laugh. One private secret was his love for the Saturday roundup of the Marvel and DC Comic cartoons. One weakness he had was his never-ending craving for "soul food" especially cabbage, collard greens, pig feet and chitlings. He was also an avid lover of the then "Redskins" and was always ready for a battle over their status.
Thomas was a dedicated member of the Jericho City of Praise, a graduate of their training classes and a devoted deacon for many years. He answered the call to relocate to Purpose Vision Family Ministries, of Waldorf, Maryland under the leadership of Pastor Barbara A. Etheridge , where he continued to be loved by many.
