Robert J. Smith, devoted husband and father, was born on October 12, 1937 – in Covington, VA. Born to parents, Charles and Jessie Lemon Smith, Robert was the youngest of 8 children: 5 girls and 3 boys. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jessie Lemon Smith, sisters, Mrs. Ethel Burks, Arnita Smith, Mrs. Loretta Goode, Mrs. Marjorie Whaling, and Mrs. Agnes Bowsky . His brothers were Charlie M. Smith, and Junior Smith. He was also preceded by his grandson, Samuel Gee.
Robert attended Watson High School, in Covington, VA. He later joined the US Army, where he served from 1955 – 1958. Once discharged, he briefly resided in Petersburg, VA. However, due to scarce job opportunities, Robert soon relocated to Washington, DC. Early on, he worked as a construction worker, during which – one of his greatest joys – was his assisting in the building of the Kennedy Center. He later obtained employment with the Department of Public Works (DPW), a government job that offered much-needed benefits. Robert was tenacious about learning new job roles and seeking upward mobility. He diligently observed co-workers who were heavy-duty equipment operators, and was instructed on how operate this type of equipment, also. With time and dedication, Robert became a well-known, highly-skilled heavy-duty equipment operator. Years later, he joined the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC WASA), where he served under the leadership of hometown friend, Jerry Johnson. Robert was a very hard-working man, who was well-respected by his peers and neighbors.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Delores H. Smith, of 42 years, son, Robert M. Smith (Lena), grandchildren, Ingrid C. Smith and Gloria Wyche. Great grandchildren, Ricky Gee ( Shekina ), Nick (Nona). Great great grandchildren; Nakail , Wakall , Ke-jagha , Nicholas, Mason, Samuel, and Miracle Gee. Nephews and nieces include: Glenn Goode (Danita), Clifford Ford (Stephanie), Walter Burks ( Jamilla ), Frank Burks (Rose), Louise Witt, along with a host of other nephews, nieces, and relatives. Cousin, Denise Megginson, and a host of other cousins, and special close friend, Leroy Jackson
He will be dearly missed and always cherished and loved, by family and friends.
