IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard Calvin
Carthorne, Sr.
October 30, 1930 – March 22, 2024
The Right Reverend
RICHARD CALVIN CARTHORNE, Sr.
There are times in our lives when we are privileged to have extraordinary people walk among us. They are the
candles whose light illuminates the paths of love, hope, joy and godliness. Reverend Richard Calvin Carthorne,
Sr. was one of those extraordinary people.
Richard Calvin Carthorne, one of God's blessed angles was born October 30, 1930 in Darlington Heights,
Cullen Virginia. He was born to two loving parents, the dearly departed Gertrude and Samuel Cawthorn.
Richard was reared with eight other siblings: Elizabeth, Beatrice, Norma, Ellen, Alford, James, Maggie and
Nathaniel, in a caring and Christian household. All siblings have gone home to be with the Lord, except
Nathaniel.
In 1952 Richard enlisted to serve in the US Marines during the Korean War. After his service to his country, he
was released with an honorable discharge which is the highest a service member can receive. It signifies that
the individual served with distinction, meeting or exceeding the military's conduct and performance standards.
Rooted and grounded in the Word of God, Richard gave his life to Christ at an early age. He served in many
capacities in the body of Christ (the church). He served as Sunday church school teacher, trustee, deacon and
then finally answered the call to preach the gospel.
In 1959, Richard Calvin Carthorne was united in Holy matrimony to the love of his life, Arthurmae Carthorne.
Together, the couple raised their children, one beautiful daughter and four handsome sons. Richard was a
devoted husband of 42 years prior to his wife's going home to be with the Lord in November 2001. He was a
dedicated father, one who always put the interest of his home, family and others first, even before himself. He
saw to it that his children and grandchildren were given the very best that he could give.
For more than thirty years, Richard was a member of the Anna Johenning Baptist Church where he served
faithfully. On September 15, 1975, the late Rev. Reid, Sr. Pastor of Anna Johenning, licensed Richard
Carthorne, Sr. with his ministerial license and then ordained him on August 30, 1979 as associate pastor. After
Rev. Reid's passing, Rev. Carthorne served as interim pastor of Anna Johenning Baptist Church for more than
two years and served with the Good News Mission prison ministry as Chaplin for over ten years. On Thursday
nights he taught bible study in the Upper Marlboro jail, as well as in other capacities such as serving on the
president's council (an advisory to the Champlin of the prison). From 1982 to 2008, Rev. Carthorne served as
Chaplain at the Greater Southeast Hospital (now United Medical Center), and pastor of their Sunday morning
worship service.
On September 27, 1992, he joined the Greater Fellowship Full Gospel Baptist Church where he was a faithful
and committed servant in ministry. Prior to his wife's passing, Rev. Richard Calvin Carthorne, Sr. and Elder
Arthurmae Carthorne were inseparable and served together in ministry, preaching and teaching the gospel,
both inside and outside of the walls. They conducted many community outreach events, evangelized through
caravan/bus ministry and were respected throughout the community. After all of this, Richard went to seminary
at the Washington Baptist Seminary and received a degree in Biblical Theology, years later he went back to
seminary with his wife to the National Bible College and Seminary and graduated with a Bachelors degree in
Biblical Studies, as the Valedictorian of his class of 2000.
Reverend Richard Carthorne, Sr. led his wife and household in such a godly and humble manner, that set the
right example for us all. The great and right Reverend was an officer of the Washington Baptist Seminary
Alumni Association and in 2011, he received a Special Recognition for more than 38 years of outreach service,
true godly life example and works he had done unto the Lord for the people of God. He never bragged publicly
or privately about all the works that he had done and services he had rendered, as he did all he did out of the
kindness of his heart and he hoped to hear God say, "Well Done, My Good and Faithful Servant". What Rev
did may have seemed small to him, but it was very big to everyone he touched and we know he hears God say
now, "well done".
Richard leaves to cherish his memories, five loving children: Gerald, Ricky, Jr., Victor, Mark and Tracie;
eleven sweet grandchildren: Latoyia, Carl, Danielle, Rynequa', Darius, Ashley, Asia, Tristina, Joseph, Greyson
and Tracie, Jr.; one brother: Nathaniel Carthorn one son-in-law: Gregory Coulter; one daughter-in-law: Tina
Carthorne; one brother-in-law, Donnie Jackson, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other family and
friends.
