Norman Edward Massie was born on May 25, 1935 to the late George W. and Maggie L. Massie. He had a determined spirit, which he kept throughout his entire 82 years. He was determined to get things done his way, and he always completed the work he had begun. His determination was even exhibited in his final days when he departed, on his own terms, after a lengthy illness on February 23, 2018.
Norman grew up in Amherst County, Virginia and was educated in the Amherst County Public School System. At an early age, he became a member of the Timothy Baptist Church in Pleasant View, Virginia. While in school, Norman worked long hours on the farm where he developed a work ethic and skills that proved invaluable throughout his life; however restless from doing farm work and determined to get off the farm, Norman moved to Washington, DC as soon as he was old enough.
On Christmas Eve in 1954, he married the love of his life, Nancy Jerlene Massie (Jerl). They remained a devoted couple for 53 years until her passing. From this union they were blessed with a daughter, Valencia, and a son Norman, who preceded him in death.
Norman worked at Giant Foods for 38 years before retiring. During his tenure with Giant, he became a well known and respected produce manager. In addition to working at Giant, Norman was an auto mechanic at Myer's Gulf Station. He had an entrepreneurial spirit, as he established a lawn service and home repair and remodeling clientele. Whether it was lawn service, produce, auto mechanic or home remodeling, Norman's skills and knowledge were highly sought after.
Norman was not only focused on his work, He had many friends and family with whom he enjoyed spending time. Being the last remaining Massie Uncle, all of his nieces and nephews competed to be his favorite. He often joked with them pretending not to remember who they were. Norman was an outdoorsman and loved spending time fishing, boating and hunting with his brothers. In his later years, his daughter, Valencia, provided opportunities for him to continue his passion by often coordinating outdoor activities, including back yard celebrations and fishing trips with nephews and grandsons. Norman also loved road trips, whether it was just going to Virginia to visit family or taking the annual family couples trips with his wife, Jerl.
He also enjoyed entertaining friends and family. He often prepared meals in the kitchen or on the backyard grill. Family and friends were always welcomed and their home was always filled with good food, love and laughter.
