Nancy Munsey went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 9, 2021. We miss dearly her vibrant physical presence with us but look forward to a reunion with her, and those who have preceded us, one day in Heaven.
Nancy was born in Washington, D.C. on August 22, 1917 to Robert R. Munsey, Chief Clerk at the historic Ebbitt Hotel in Washington, D.C., and Nannie A. Motley, who would later become the Telephone Operator for the Calverton Apartments, where Nancy lived. Nancy was raised and lived most of her life in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Central High School in 1935. She then went to work for retired Army General Amos Fries, The Founder and President of The Friends of the Public Schools of America Organization. Nancy worked in the Albee Building typing the monthly Friends of the Public Schools Bulletin. She frequently accompanied General Fries to hearings on Capitol Hill, and observed his persuasive techniques promoting conservative patriotism with congressmen and senators. Because of her beauty and fun-loving nature, she was nicknamed by others as "The Sweetheart of the Albee Building." In 1946 Nancy passed the rigorous secretarial typing test for the Federal Government, and went to work for the Civil Aeronautics Board and assisted in the investigation of many airplane crashes, including the worst disaster in airline history in 1949 involving an Eastern Airlines plane with a P38 plane from Bolivia, and attended the hearings at the Department of Commerce. The Civil Aeronautics Board was later organized as part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where she continued to work for the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) until her retirement in 1982.
When Nancy was young, her aunt taught her how to play the piano. She adored playing the baby grand piano that her mother gave her, and she became quite a virtuoso, later playing for services at local churches. She loved to read, and always had a current newspaper and several biographies of movie stars nearby. She also enjoyed getting out to live musicals and movies. Nancy was the life of any family party that she attended with her quick wit, fun-loving attitude and ability to entertain through her stories or by playing any song you wanted on the piano.
When she was in her early 90s and could no longer get around on her own, Nancy moved to Fairfax Nursing Center in Fairfax, Virginia. She was well known in the Center because she could strike up a conversation with anyone and was just a pleasure to be around. Nancy is survived by her nephew Blair Lybbert (Diane) & family, niece Nancy Lynne Wise, her cousin Ron Motley (Kate), Ron's brothers (Gerald, Michael, Kevin) and sisters (Cecilia, Karen) & spouses, all the Motley family children and grand-children, and the daughters of Yerby Colom ( Maria Huebner, Ines Ragland, and Crissy Miles) and their families.
A service honoring Nancy will be held at the graveside at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 4111 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suitland, Maryland 20746 on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 1 pm. Flowers may be sent to the family in memory of Nancy by directing them to the attention of Cedar Hill Funeral Home, 4111 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suitland, Maryland 20746.
We leave you with a photo of young Nancy, at age 20 in the Summer of 1937, practicing the tango in front of a mulberry bush. In Nancy's words, as remembered by Maria Heubner, "I will be dancing with Jesus when I get to Heaven."
