Obituary

Michael T. Legrand of Suitland, Maryland transitioned peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, January 23, 2020, at Inova Alexandria Hospital.

He was the firstborn to the late Dennis Augustus and Sandra Theresa Legrand on January 24, 1958.  His maternal grandparents were the late William Thomas and Madeline Evelyn Robinson.

Michael grew up in the Capitol Hill area in Northeast, Washington, D.C.   He attended District of Columbia Public Schools: Kingsman Elementary, Browne Junior High and Spingarn High Schools.  Later he attended Prince George's County Public School, Potomac High.  While in school, he excelled as an All-American athlete playing Basketball, Football, Baseball, and Track & Field.

Michael was an avid sports fan including his beloved Minnesota Vikings; he enjoyed swimming, playing ping pong, shooting pool, the Carrom game board, horseshoes, handball, and more. He loved cooking, fashion, and playing his favorite card games such as Uno, Casino, Spades and Bid Whist.  He also loved shopping for his family online and was an early adopter before it became popular.

Michael held jobs at UDC Federal College, the University of Maryland College Park, Event Coordination at the Washington DC Convention Center, UK Movers, and USPS.  He was a self-made entrepreneur, creating multiple business ventures over the course of his journey. In addition to his personal businesses, Michael was a fashion designer and sold items to his fellow coworkers.

Michael had health issues in 2006, but bounced back and started a lawn care business that became successful, until he had a setback in 2016 and became confined to a rehabilitation center in Arlington, VA.

He is survived by one son, Brionta' Turner (District Heights, MD), and one daughter, Zakiyyah Turner (Washington, D.C.), eight grandchildren, Tarik, Jala, Jeremiah, Brionta' and Elijah Turner, Jabril McComb, Jasmine and Jamani Johnson, one great-grandchild, Janiyla Green, one brother, Alvin Legrand (District Heights, MD); two sisters, Denise Funderburk (Washington, DC) and Marisa Williams (Maurice) (High Point, NC).  He has two aunts, Anita Jefferson (Suitland, MD) and Zakiyyah Haddad (Washington, D.C.); two uncles, Matthew Robinson (Washington, D.C.), and John Robinson (Albuquerque, NM). He has eight first-cousins, Taalib-Din Haddad (Washington, D.C.), Shamsud-Din Haddad (Capital Heights, MD), William Bell and Michael Jesse Robinson (Washington, D.C.), Joseph Robinson (Portland, OR), Jordan Robinson (Albuquerque, NM), John Burris (Washington, D.C.), and Kia Newby (Waldorf, MD). He has five nieces and nephews, Cecilia Ruff (Michael) (Fort Washington, MD), Mark Funderburk (Suitland MD), Jewel Funderburk (Kernersville, NC), Joi Legrand (High Point, NC), Netania Funderburk (Suitland, MD); six great-nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death was one brother, Wilton Legrand, three uncles, Ralph Hawkins, Thomas Robinson, Vincent Robinson, and two first-cousins, Ralph and Daniel Robinson, and one nephew, Dennis Legrand.
