Our beloved, Martha C. Wilson departed this life and entered into rest on August 14, 2019. She was born in Washington, DC to the late Otis Cartledge and Carrie Neal Martin-Cartledge. Early in life, she married Clyde O. Wilson, Sr. who adopted and helped raise her beloved son, Richard Clyde Wilson, (aka Antjuan), who preceded her in death on October 2005.
After the death of her mother at the tender age of nine, her father, Otis finished raising Martha and her younger brother, John (aka Sammy) in Thomson, Georgia where she completed her education in McDuffie County Public School System with honors.
In 1962 after graduating from high school, Martha relocated back to Washington, DC to complete higher education in business and later worked for the District of Columbia Government. Martha eventually became the executive assistant to mayors: Harold Washington, Marion Barry, and briefly with Sharon Pratt Kelly until her retirement in 1992.
When most of us think of Martha, we would describe her as a spitfire and a straight shooter, who didn't mince words. Being raised in a close-knit family, she was the ninth out of ten children. She stood firm in her convictions and was ride or die to those whom she loved. Those closest to Martha knows of her crush on Billy "Dee" Williams…but until her death, Martha's heart and soul belonged to her devoted and adoring son, Antjuan.
If you had a serious concern or problem, Martha was very reassuring and encouraging when responding. Though she was a private person by nature, if you took the time to talk with her or ask a question, she would answer it honestly and sincerely. She was extremely grateful whenever anyone did something for her.
She was meticulous in performing whatever tasks she was asked to do. Martha was the go-to person for folding, ironing, and sewing because she could do by hand, a much better job than the so-called professionals did. Once she finished, she would say, "I would've done a much better job, but my hands were aching, (whether folding, ironing, or sewing, it was perfect every time)." The family says that she could sew a seam in stockings.
For the past eight years, Martha lived with her great-niece Shamika Pratt where she was able to develop a strong bond with two of her great, great-nieces Naiyah and Kayla and two of her great, great-nephews Ronald and Resin. Martha was gentle and kind to them. Whenever they wanted some of her candy or junk food, she would allow them to think that they were conning her into sharing with them. Martha's sassy personality will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Martha's memory is cherished by her: Grandchildren Naomi Owens (Jordan) and Jujuan Wilson; Great-grandchildren: Jaleel and Keiko; daughter-in-law Joan Wilson; Brothers Lawrence Martin and Jesse L. Martin, Jr. (Jocelyn); First cousins: Adele Harrison (Gary) and L. Louise Ellis; a host of Nieces and Nephews, sisters-in-law: Sadie Martin and Sharon Cartledge; close family friends: Loretta Myles, Claudette Bruce, Nina Pompey, DeAndre Gross, and Renee Woodard; Beloved siblings who preceded in death is her sister, Mattie Pratt and her brothers: Eddie Lee Martin, Norris Lee Martin, Percy J. Martin, William T. Martin, Jonah Martin, and John S. Cartledge.
The family would like to thank all those in attendance. We would also like to express warm appreciation to Cedar Hill Funeral Home, Inc. for their excelling support during our time of deep sorrow.
