Martha Conway Carter was born in Martinsville, Virginia on October 23, 1913 to the union of Tommie Joe Hairston and Sallie Atkins Hairston. She made her transition to the Heavenly Kingdom on August 15, 2008 in Washington, DC.
She was raised by her grandparents, John and Mattie H. Flippen.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Herman L. Carter and her son, Sherman Carter.
She leaves to cherish the memories of her life; three daughters, Cornelia Carter, Rosita Effinger and Anita Carter; nine grandchildren, Mattia Davis, Tracey Gantt, Gianna Carter, Marta Crichlow (Rudyard), Michael Effinger (Gaye), Stephen Carter (Cheryl), Renita Page, Richard Carter (Marie) and Tina Panholzer; seventeen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the Franklin P. Nash United Methodist Church, Lincoln Road and U Street, NE, Washington, DC from 10:00 AM until the service at 11:00 AM. Interment in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland.
