Obituary

Martha Edith Anderson was born on August 13, 1940, in Fairmont, NC, to Cordie and Cagie Baker.  She was the seventh oldest of their ten children.

She graduated from Hilly Branch High School and later attended Federal City College in Washington, DC.  Edith as she was affectionately called married Guy Colvin, Jr., and they had two daughters, Ethel Louise and Barbara Anita.  After Guy's death, she married Harvey R. Anderson and another daughter was born, India Kagey. She selflessly made countless sacrifices to raise her daughters and she was very proud of all of them.

Edith was employed by the Government Printing Office and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Washington, DC where she retired in 1995 after 26 years of service. She began her career at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing as a Bill Examiner. She was also a licensed Realtor in Maryland.

Edith gave her life to the Lord as a child and spent the rest of her life trusting in Him. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights, Washington, DC where she sang in the Chancellor Choir and the William Tyler Choir.  Later, she moved her membership to Jericho City of Praise, Landover, MD where she sang on the Mass Choir. Edith also served in the Food Pantry at Jericho City of Praise. She attended and obtained her Diploma of Achievement from the Jericho Christian College in 2001.

She battled Breast Cancer and the Lord healed her. Edith was an eighteen-year survivor of Breast Cancer.

Edith loved to travel the world by land, sea or air. She did not believe in letting the grass grow under her feet.

Edith was a warm, friendly, lively, and giving person who always showed love to others.  She loved her family deeply. Edith would give you anything that she had. She helped many and never expected anything in return. There was never a time when you would come to her house and she would not feed you. She was a fantastic cook and she loved cooking for those that she loved. Edith loved music and she loved to dance. She had a captivating smile and a laugh that you could hear and recognize a mile away.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Cordie and Cagie Baker; one sister; Ethel Baker, three brothers;  Elias Baker, Alfred John Baker and Clem Baker

She leaves to cherish her memory:  three daughters, Ethel Cooke (Vincent), Barbara Etheridge (Steave), and India Yates (Paris); two granddaughters:  Asia and China Yates; one grandson:  Paris Yates, Jr.; three sisters:  Virginia Dinnerson, Doris Kelley, and Ruth Moore; two brothers:  Robert Baker (Betty) and Andrew Baker (Brenda), a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
