Obituary

Maria Teresa George was born July 20, 1934 in Carrollton, Alabama to Almond & Willie Ann Wright (Maiden name Washington). To this union, two daughters were born.  Maria was their eldest daughter. Maria attended Pickens County Training School in Alabama.  Upon graduation, she bravely joined the United States Air Force.  After being honorably discharged, Maria pursued an interest in nursing.  She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marymount University.  Degree in hand, she commenced her long term career of nursing.  Maria served as a registered nurse on the Psychiatric Ward of St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. for many years until ultimately retiring from the D.C. Government.

As a child Maria attended Spring Hill Baptist Church in Alabama.  She spoke of her days in Alabama and how she enjoyed all the dynamics of her family.  Early in life, Maria found great joy in traveling all across the globe, much of which began with her affiliation with the Rosicrucian.  Some of her overseas destinations included Africa, Vietnam, Thailand, London, Australia, Africa, Germany, China and Mexico. She touched nearly every continent, while gaining a vast knowledge of many diverse cultures.  In her last few years of life, her world revolved around her grandchildren whom she loved beyond measure.  Maria was elated to be the primary caregiver for both Kadyn & Norah from just three months old until she could no longer.

Maria is survived by her life partner, Charlie Thomas; her step-daughter, Chanel D. Thomas; step-son Cedric D. Thomas; grandchildren Kadyn D. Thomas-Awwad & Norah Lynn Thomas-Awwad; brother in law, Foster Mundy Jr.; nephew Ron Mundy; nieces Alicia F. Mundy & Jacalyn D. Mundy; step-sister Mary F. Lewis and a host of other relatives and friends.

Maria was preceded to Heaven by her mother, Willie Ann Wright; father, Almond Wright; step-mother, Elnator Wright; sister, Ernestine Mundy; husband Willie George and step-sister Mildred Darden Smith.

The Thomas & Mundy families welcome all to Cedar Hill Funeral Home located at 4111 Pennsylvania Avenue in Suitland, Maryland on Monday, October 22 nd for Maria's celebration of life.  The viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 with service, burial and repast to follow.
