L.B. Pleasant, at age 74, made his transition on September 15, 2019. He is survived by his wife, Caroline, of 42 years; children (Shelynda Williams, Pernell Pleasant, James Pleasant, Candice Pleasant; grandchild, Desiree Pleasant, his sister, Florence Spells, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. He was the best husband, father, grandfather and friend he knew how to be.
L.B. was born in Wilson, NC on May 26, 1945, to Leona Pleasant Moore and Grant Brooks, (both deceased). He grew up and received his education in Wilson.
After school, he worked in construction. He moved to Washington, D.C. and worked at Washington Hospital Center as a security guard, and later as a security guard at People's Drug Store. In 1969, he met Caroline Glover. They had a son, James, in 1970, and a daughter, Candice, in 1975, and married in 1977.
L.B. began his work with the Metropolitan Washington Area Transit Authority (Metro), in February of 1975. He started as a bus cleaner, and he worked his way up to Tire Machinist. His friends and co-workers at Metro called him "Plezz." He worked at Metro for 28 years and retired in April 2003.
L.B. was a kind, easy-going person and a good neighbor. After retirement, he watched out for any odd goings-on around the neighbors' homes while they were away. He seemed to know someone most places he went and was well-liked by all who met him. He was truly loved by family and those who knew him well.
He became a member of Unity Center of Light in 1993. At church, he spent several years as a volunteer on "The Sound Team;" making sure the audio equipment was ready for service, and he sang in the church choir. At the church's annual cook-out, he was famous for his fried fish, fried cabbage, and hush puppies. Even when he no longer cooked, he still "supervised" the next generation of cooks at the church.
He always thought of ways to have a business. Over the years he had an ice cream truck, hand-painted signs and designs on vans and trucks, and a videography business. In 2002, he received his diploma from The School of Gourmet Cooking and Catering, and in 2003 received a Certified Professional Food Manager certificate. He and a friend had a grilling business and cooked for church, private outdoor cookouts, and other events. He gave up the catering/grilling business for health reasons and turned to baking delicious cookies, cakes, and pies.
His other hobbies were watching cooking shows on TV (especially with family), trying out new baking recipes (with family as taste-testers), fishing, league bowling, going to movies with family or friends, watching his favorite TV shows, and going to flea markets with family or friends. He loved the sound of the guitar, and took lessons at the community center, and played in a class concert. He had a natural talent for drawing and painting. He enjoyed painting landscapes and wild animals such as lions, tigers, and wolves. He sold some paintings and some of his artwork is displayed in his home.
He is predeceased by his brother, George F. Moore; sisters, Brenda E. Newsome, Betty J. Washington, and Vermelle Barnes, grandson, James L. Pleasant, Jr.
The family would like to thank everyone who has added love and joy to L.B.'s life.
"The purpose of life is not only to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." – Ralph Waldo Emerson (edited)
For anyone who knew L.B., they could absolutely say these three words to describe him and his life: "Dependable, Considerate, and Calm".
