J ames Edward Banks, transitioned to his heavenly home on Friday, February 1, 2019. James was born on November 16, 1924 to the late William Billy and Susie Banks. James was born and raised in Greene County, Virginia where he received his education in the Virginia Public School System. Thereafter, James moved to Washington, DC. On June 7, 1959, James happily married the love of his life, Elizabeth Louise Banks. From this union they were blessed with three children; daughter, Carolyn Banks; and two sons, Andre and Bryant Banks.
James had a love and passion for driving. His superb navigational skills landed him in his career as a truck driver at The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company (C&P), now known as Verizon. He retired in 1993 with many years of dedicated service. James and Liz truly enjoyed traveling and taking family trips to the beach.
James was wise, had a loving soul, and a kind spirit that melted the hearts of many. He was known to be the life of the party and had a personality that stood out from the crowd. Everyone that knew James was intrigued by how he infused humor into any given situation or conversation. His humor, laughter and cooking always filled our souls. His ultimate joy was bringing his entire family together and cooking his famous soul food dishes. In his pastime, he enjoyed sitting in his favorite chair watching his favorite television programs and bursting out into that everlasting familiar laugh that we will never forget.
James was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Elizabeth L. Banks; and loving daughter, Veeta Sims.
James is survived by his loving children; Ellen Banks, Rafis Banks, Carolyn Banks, Andre Banks (Donna), Bryant Banks, Harold Sims (Janice), and Phyllis Mckelvin (Michael); 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great grandchildren. He also leaves to cherish his memories; special long-term friends, Bill Hayes and the late Jean Hayes; a devoted daughter-in-law, Donna Banks; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
