IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Holly Montgomery,
Jr.
August 3, 1939 – September 5, 2021
The spirit of Mr. Holly Montgomery Jr. went to join our savior in that home not built with hands, but whose maker and builder is God. He departed from his earthly residence on September 5, 2021.
He was born August 3, 1939, in Lee County, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Holly Montgomery Sr. and Anna Wilson Montgomery. He was the tenth child born out of eleven to this union. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings which include, Ashby Montgomery, Luther Montgomery, Asberry Montgomery, Albert Montgomery, Willie Montgomery, Clifton Montgomery, Emma Montgomery Hubbard, Christine Montgomery Bonner, Carrie Dell Montgomery Fulwood, and Lillie Mae Montgomery China.
At an early age, he joined Mt.Sinai Presbyterian Church of St. Charles, SC. Holly was educated in the Lee County school system and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. Later in life, he attended First Baptist Church of Minnesota Ave SE of Washington, DC.
Holly was employed by the International Union of Operating Engineers of Suitland Maryland for 36 years. He was a member of Local 77 for 50 years. He was a part of numerous jobs throughout the DMV which include various metro stations, Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and the Convention Center. Throughout his entire career he rarely, almost never called off work unless Mary insisted that he rest. He was known to be a workaholic and was never late.
Holly married his High School sweetheart Mary Louise Wells, November 21, 1959. They moved to Washington D.C in 1960 and from this union they had three girls Cynthia B. Montgomery, Sharon Kimpson (Frank), Yolanda V. Tinsley (Louis); two boys Tracy Montgomery (Alma), and Holly Montgomery V.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his children; thirteen grandchildren which include Donnell Kimpson the oldest grandson; twenty-three great grandchildren which include Lovely Montgomery the oldest great granddaughter; surviving sister in laws which include Blanche Montgomery, Remona Montgomery, and Mattie Montgomery; surviving brother in laws which include Michael Wells (Paula), Neil Sander (Geraldine) and Marion Wells (Tawanna) and other relatives and friends.
Holly was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was a father figure to his nephews Clifton Montgomery, Rollie Montgomery, and Holly Montgomery (little Holly). He would help anyone get a job and would even pick them up and take them to work, but you had to be on time because he would leave you. He enjoyed racing his 69 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet and working in the yard of their home in both Washington, DC. and Sumter, SC. He was a self-taught mechanic. His favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys. He was a sharp dresser and was always on the dance floor at family gatherings.
The family would also like to give special thanks to his caregiver Connie Williams, and his team of nurses and staff at Regency Hospice of Florence, SC.
