Obituary

Garfield "Moe" Kenneth Morton, Sr. entered eternal rest on Thursday, August 3, 2023. He was born on October 15, 1950, to the late Smoot Morton, Sr., and Hattie Lofty Morton. He had 5 sisters and 3 brothers. His family and friends called him Moe. He grew up in Catlett, Virginia, where he was educated in Fauquier County public schools. He later moved to Washington, D.C. to seek employment and became an employee of D.C. Public Schools.  After starting his own business in vending for several years, he later entered the workforce as an apprentice bricklayer, developing skills to become a brick mason.  In 1991, he became an employee of the federal government and joined the National Park Service at the U.S. Department of Interior as a brick mason.  He held many other positions in his tenure at NPS until his retirement in 2016.

At the age of 19, Garfield met the love of his life, Gail Rawlings Morton. They were married in 1971 and had two children – Garfield Kenneth, Jr., and Mecca Angel.  He had a strong love for family and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Moe's favorite pass time was watching NASCAR races on TV and occasionally taking a trip to the racetrack with friends.  He could sit for hours in his favorite chair in the garage watching old western shows and a few new reality ones. He liked to travel—just not by flying—but enjoyed cruises. He was a long-time resident of Clinton, MD where he loved to walk. His walks were almost daily, covering up to five or more miles each trip while listening to R&B music from the 60s and 70s.

Moe was preceded in death by his loving son, Garfield Kenneth Morton, Jr., and sister Estelle Simon and brother Joseph Morton.  He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Gail Morton of 52 years, daughter Mecca Morton, grandchildren Cortnee, Trey, MaKenzie, Madison and Marlie, mother-in-law Betty Rawlings, and daughter-in-law Kristie Morton. Brother to Smoot Morton, Jr., Clyde Morton, Trudy Boyd, Gloria Johnson, Brenda East and Nancy Buckner.  Brothers-in law, sisters-in law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.  Memories of Moe will last in our hearts forever; he will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends at the Cedar Hill Funeral Home, 4111 Pennsylvania Ave, Suitland, MD on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 10:00 AM.
