Fred V. Fugitt was born on September 19, 1939. He was one of five children born to Ida Elizabeth and Norvel S. Fugitt. He began his life in Woodstock, Virginia with his brother Harold and sister Ida "Sissy", later a younger brother, George and baby sister, Patricia "Bonnie" joined the family. They eventually moved to Washington, DC. Where Fred graduated high school.
Upon completing high school, Fred joined the Army and served from July 9, 1957 until June 29, 1960. After leaving the Army, Fred married Brenda and they had two children Debbie and Fred Jr "FJ". Fred's career included meat cutting, auto mechanic, and service attendant. He enjoyed taking things apart and was not always successful at putting them back together. It was shared that he would offer to fix the watch you were wearing and it would come back with extra parts and not working.
Fred met Helen and they began their life together in Washington, DC. They enjoyed trips to Kentucky together and would often include Helen's mother, Elizabeth. Fond memories with Fred and Helen would include open house on Christmas Eve at their home.
Fred was a simple man of few words and those words were always softly spoken. He enjoyed family, fishing, old westerns, doing crosswords, playing cards, he followed sports and was a home town man when it came to his favorite teams and regardless of what he was doing he could and would often enjoy a nice cold Bud.
Fred was able to visit with many family members before leaving us on June 10, 2018. He spent his last years at the Morningside House of Laurel where he was popular with both the other residents and the staff. After visiting with Fred it was easy to see he was a ladies' man around Morningside. Whether you called Maryland, Maine, Florida, North Carolina or Washington State your home, you always found yourself visiting Uncle Fred or aka Uncle Freddy when in town. Special thanks to Jerry, Harold, Sis and Claudette for all they did to make Fred's time at Morningside comfortable.
His family takes comfort in knowing his spirit is in the company of loved ones whose journey's end preceded his; especially his parents Ida and Norvel, as well as his younger sister, Bonnie, his daughter Debbie, his wife Helen, mother-in-law Elizabeth, sisters-in-law Ginger and Carolyn, brother-in-law Cal and nephew Bubzy.
Fred leaves behind many family members who loved him very much and will miss him, two brothers Harold and George, sister Ida, brother-in-law Ken, nephews Mike, Jim, Chris, Tim, Jerry, George, Ira, Champ, Bruce and Duane, nieces Patti, Robin, Pennie, Claudette, Jenny, and Carey, and their families, as well as a host of nieces-in-law, nephews-in-law, great nieces and great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews, loved ones and friends.
Our family would like to express its gratitude for the love and support we've received during this difficult time. Your prayers and well wishes have been a source of comfort for each of us.
Taps will be played one last time for Fred, at graveside burial.
Day is done, Gone the sun, From the hills, From the lakes, From the skies. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Go to sleep, Peaceful sleep, May the soldier, God keep.
