Obituary

Frances Small, born on August 25, 1947, in Greenville, SC, entered the next chapter of her beloved life and transitioned to eternal rest on January 17, 2024, after a brief illness. She was the cherished daughter of the late John and Alice Booker and the big sister of Daniel Booker. At the tender age of five, she encountered the profound loss of both parents. This early hardship became a testament to her resilience, teaching her that with the grace of God, she could confront any adversity. Raised by her maternal grandmother, Annie Lou Scott, Frances received her education in the public school system of Santee, S.C.

On December 17, 1977, Frances united in holy matrimony to Gurney Small, Jr.  They were blessed to raise two children, Phillip and Alethea. Frances took great pride in her family, whom she held dear as the center of her world.

Frances's professional journey led her to Washington, D.C., where she devoted nearly 30 years to AARP as a Pharmacist Technician. After AARP closed the pharmacy, Frances initially planned to take some time for herself before starting work again.  However, her expertise drew the attention of NeighborCare Pharmacy, where she worked for nearly two decades before retiring in 2013.

Frances found solace and spiritual fulfillment in her faith, accepting Jesus as her Lord and Savior after relocating to Washington, D.C. She joined Enon Baptist Church under the guidance of Rev. Arthur N. Shingler, serving in various capacities until work commitments on Sundays posed a challenge. Despite this, Frances remained connected to her church and continued to nurture her spiritual connection.

Throughout her life, Frances remained grateful for her blessings. She reflected on the trials of her childhood that shaped her character and passed on the valuable lessons of facing life's challenges with unwavering strength and grace. Family and friends held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in hosting gatherings that brought loved ones together. Frances was known for her warm hospitality, inviting people from far and near to share in the joy of fellowship and good food.

Frances is survived by her loving husband, Gurney; two children, Phillip (Diana) and Alethea (Willie); three grandchildren, Ralphael, Philyce, and Alysa; two great-grandchildren, Layla and Lyric; one brother, Daniel Booker; one aunt, Albertha Williams; two sisters-in-law, Ola Mae Rivers and Cora Davis, along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends who will forever cherish her memory.

In celebrating the life and legacy of Frances Small, we remember a woman of strength, resilience, and boundless love who touched the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in peace, her spirit forever alive in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
