Obituary

ETHEL SUE 'PEGGY' CASEY was born December 9, 1939 to Willie Estelle Newbill and Ervin 'Chig' McKinley Robertson in Sandy Level, VA. She departed this life, October 10, 2018, at Southern Maryland Hospital.

Peggy grew up in a section of Chapel Oaks, MD known as 'The Bottom' during her P.G. County grade school years. She later moved to another part of Chapel Oaks when her parents were able to purchase their first and only home. In 1958, Peggy graduated from Fairmont Heights, Sr. High School. It was during those early years, that Peggy began building and nurturing friendships that would last a lifetime. Some of those relationships includes childhood friends, Rachel Ricks Carey, Odena Hicks, Evelyn Carter, Raymond 'Pummie', Mary Lee, friends from the Market, the Dialysis Center, the Charmettes and Suitland Nursing home where she met Martha, Diane and Gloria, just to name a few.

Some of her fondest memories are from the summers she spent 'down the country' with her maternal grandfather and at her Great Aunt Allie's house. Peggy was proud to say she never missed a summer. Oh, how she loved the time she spent hanging out with her many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends in Penhook, VA. From early childhood until her last visit 3 years ago, she particularly enjoyed the annual homecoming celebration at the Mt. Zion church. She was sure to be there the first Sunday in August every year.

It was at Fairmont Heights where Peggy first took child development classes. She took that training and coupled that with all the love she possessed, when she took on her first job where she provided childcare for the Greene family. Who knew she would grow to love Ingra and Ingra would love her back until she departed this earth 59 years later – another lifelong relationship. Peggy later worked at Suitland Nursing Home and Cedar Hill Cemetery. She retired, January 1995 from her nursing assistant position at DC Village.

When Peggy loved, she loved passionately. She was all in. If you knew Peggy, you knew just how much she loved the colors BLUE and WHITE, pretty BUTTERFLIES, CACHE cologne, WHITE CARNATIONS and oh boy did she love THE WHISPERS and JAMES BROWN. Nobody really knows exactly how many times she saw the Whispers in concert but it was a bunch and she would always stay after to be able to see them close up. Peggy cherished the James Brown cuff link she was destined to catch at one of his concerts. Be it a nail polish, a favorite food, clothes, or the white car she just had to have, she just loved them all in a really big way. She often referred to a good NAP as being so good she could taste it. You could only wish to have a nap as good as one of Peggy's. She used to sew and later learned to crochet and make gift baskets. She took a drawing class and turned out to be quite artistic. She loved to pose for pictures and was quite the ham. She was always willing to dress up and get in front of the camera. If she had her way today, there would be a picture of her at every pew. She had lots of fun walking the runway as a plus size model and loved shopping on a rainy day. She enjoyed spending time with her sister Charmettes. Let's just say her passions were many and very dear to her heart.

It was during one of those special summers when Peggy, at the tender age of 14, in 1953, met the love of her life and future husband, James Elmo Casey, who she affectionately called Shuga . Their relationship went from a long distance love to 'Case' eventually moving to Maryland where they wed on Thanksgiving Day, 1961. Their lives were good and they were extremely happy – the model happy couple. They lived in DC and later moved to Capital Heights, MD where they lived for almost 50 years. The only thing missing was what was to become the absolute twinkle in both their eyes. After nine years of marriage, the great news came that there was to be an arrival of their one and only daughter, Desha Deionn Casey. Peggy just loved 'Dinky Doo!' Desha truly completed Peggy.  Desha was a dutiful, dedicated and loving daughter who was all they could ever wish for. Peggy and Case's marriage lasted an incredible 53 years until his untimely passing in 2014.

Peggy was a brave soul. She was always upbeat and positive. She kept a song on her lips. Her medical struggles began in 1995 when she started dialysis. Her tolerance for pain was unmatched and she certainly had more than her share of physical pain. Peggy never complained. She always recognized how lucky and blessed she was. Having her husband and daughter at her side was always good enough. Desha was always there, holding up her mother with a vengeance. They were quite the pair. Even with her challenges, more doors to long-lasting relationships opened. She often spoke fondly of her friends at the Fresenius Kidney Care Dialysis Center. She spent countless hours there and was loved by everyone that came in contact with her.

Peggy was the best. She was fun, lively and energetic. She was always into something. She was fun to be around and people were drawn to her. She will be missed in a mighty way.

In addition to her daughter Desha, Peggy was survived by cousin May, Ingra, Baby Sasha Casey - the cat, Aunt Nannie Harris, Uncle Bill Robertson, her sisters-in-law, Marsha and Joyce, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, lovingly known as Willie and 'Chig,' 2 brothers, Earl and Wiley Robertson.
