Ms. EMMA JEAN GORDON, gained her wings on Friday, January 17, 2020 at Medstar Southern Maryland Hospital. Daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Lee Parker and granddaughter of the late Beatrice Brown. She is the sister of Jeannie May Johnson and the late Harold Thomas. She was also preceded in death by her late husband Eugene Gordon.
Jean, as she preferred to be called, entered this world on August 17, 1941 in Tampa, Florida. She attended the public school system in Florida, graduating High School in 1958. She met Eugene Gordon in Tampa, Florida in which he lived a few blocks from where she lived and in late 1965 he asked her to come with him to Washington, DC. She packed her bags and didn't look back. She married Eugene on February 19, 1966 at John Wesley Church in Washington, DC. She started working at WTOP Radio as a receptionist, meeting a number of celebrities during her tenure at the radio station. She worked for the radio station for a total of 17 years on and off due to taking a break to raise her children
Two years into the marriage she gave birth to a daughter Karyn, who was born during the rioting the day after Dr. Martin Luther King was buried and four years later a son Terry, who decided he wasn't going to wait until Thanksgiving to get here. When her husband passed on April 27 th , 1976, she moved from her apartment to a house on Easy Place, SE still in Washington, DC and has lived there since then. All the children on the block loved Mrs. Gordon and she loved them. Whenever any of the neighbor's kids disappeared, their mom's knew exactly where they went and came knocking at the door.
She attended two churches in the Washington, DC area Ward Memorial off of Benning Road and Jones Memorial United Methodist on G Street, but never became an active member. She worked the voter's pole every 4 years when it came time to vote and she was active every week helping to serve the homeless at SOME with a few of her neighbors. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.
She leaves to cherish her memories 2 children, a daughter Karyn Taylor and a son Terry Gordon (Lateesha), 4 granddaughters, Tionna Jackson, Krystyna and Jaylynne Taylor and Taylor Gordon, a great granddaughter, Hailee Lewis, a bonus granddaughter and great grandson, Emani Bailey and Joshua Matthews and a host of relatives and friends.
