With hearts full of love and peace, we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Elizabeth Ann Mitchell on Friday, July 24, 2026.

She was known by many as Liz, to some as Ann, she was even Nana to others. For us, she was simply Mommy. Family and community was everything to Mommy. She believed in the African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” which enforces a community helping the parents love, nurture, teach, and guide the children - a village.

Liz relocated to Washington, DC in 1964 as a young, independent, determined woman from Mt. Jackson, Virginia, in search of advanced education and a career. Liz loved DC and found all that she aspired and more. DC is where she met the love of her life, her husband Nathaniel Mitchell (Mitchell) and started her family in a new house in Southeast and having two beautiful girls, Tracie and Nicole. She loved being a mother and a wife. Liz exposed her girls to all the culture and opportunities that the city had to offer. She and Mitchell loved taking the girls to visit the Smithsonian museums, the National Mall and all the monuments downtown. She also loved the music, the Black culture and the educational prospects that came with living in the city, and she shared that love with her girls. Many Saturdays were spent at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library downtown, at one of the many cultural festivals, street fairs and parades hosted by the city, in a children’s workshop at the Smithsonian, or listening to a live music show at the Kennedy Center. Education was also important to Liz and Mitchell. Liz pushed her girls to be independent and smart and taught them that “Education is key. Education can never be taken from you”.

Staying true to her Christian roots, Liz found a church home at All Souls Unitarian Church in Northwest, Washington, DC. Liz loved hearing Reverend David Eaton deliver a message from God about faith, kindness and love, interwoven with a message of political resistance against wrongdoing and injustice. She attended All Souls until the travel from Southeast to Northwest and searching for parking was too much for her although she remained a tithing member. During her later years, Liz attended Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church and Faith Tabernacle of Prayer, both in Southeast, Rivers of Life AME Church and New Hope AME Church, both in Maryland. During the COVID pandemic, she began watching the services online, and became particularly fond of Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Bullett and her husband, Nathaniel Mitchell. Her love and legacy lives on through her daughters Tracie Mitchell-Dunbar (Marcus) and Kathy Mitchell, her grandson Marcus Dunbar Jr. and a multitude of extended family and friends.

A celebration of life and homegoing service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at New Hope AME Church, 12310 Washington Square, Waldorf, MD 20601. The wake will begin at 11am, service to follow at 12pm. There will be a repass immediately following the service at the New Hope AME Church Fellowship Hall.

The Mitchell and Dunbar families would like to thank you for the heartfelt words, cards, flowers, prayers and support. The kind expressions of love and admiration for Mommy have eased the sorrow and made this transition to a “new normal” a little easier to bear. We are at peace.
