Edward Herman Schartner was born December 6, 1923 to Fredrick and Christina Schartner in North Braddock, Pa. He was taken to heaven by the angels on Monday, April 9, 2018. Preceding him in Glory with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ were his parents Fredrick and Christina and his sisters Ida, Alma, Hilda, Esther, and Emma. Mourning his loss are his first wife Betty Holmes and his life companion for the last 48 years Florence Kory.
"Eddie" as he was affectionately known as grew up in North Braddock, Pa moving to Washington, D.C. at the age of ten. He graduated from Mc Kinley Tech High School in 1941. In 1943 he entered the United States Navy serving for three years during which time in was in active duty in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. He earned service awards for the Pacific and American Theatres, and for the liberation of the Philippines. He also was given the Victory Medal. From 1946-1951, he earned his apprenticeship becoming a certified machinist. From 1951-1980, he was a highly valued employee for the Federal Government at the Navy Yard and the NSA. He retired in 1980 with the last 33 years with NSA.
Family was everything to Eddie. His three children Anne, Jim, and John learned Christian values, and the love of family at an early age. Judy and Chet Kulawiak, daughter and son-in-law of Florence Kory also became part of his loving family. This love of family extended to not only Eddie's immediate family but also to all his sisters, adopted sisters, nieces, and nephews. He was fondly known as "Uncle Eddie" the person you could always count on in a family crisis.
Eddie's passions included tinkering in the garage, boating on the Chesapeake, and loving his cats. He was an inventor of small gadgets like trash can cords to keep the plastic bags in place or welding copper tubing to make hose holders. Crabbing and fishing on the Chesapeake in his boat were another of his joys. He was an avid cat lover. This year, he celebrated being a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Order of Maryland for 50 years.
Eddie passed away peacefully on Monday, April 9, 2018 into the arms of Jesus in his own home. His legacy will live on in his children: Annie, husband Paul (children Annette and Bobby), son Jim and wife Ginny (children Scott, Jeff, and Ellen), son John (children Tony and Julie), and eleven great children. His entire family celebrates the 94 years of life of Edward Herman Schartner.
