On October 3, 2024, God opened His heavenly gates to welcome His son, Damon Leroy Matthews, Sr., with open arms.

Damon was born on September 24, 1971, at the former D.C. General Hospital in Washington, D.C., to Dale Stewart and the late Chester Leroy Russell, who await his heavenly journey to reunite with him.

He attended Duval High School in Prince George's County, MD. After graduating, he dedicated his life to Christ by joining Reed Temple Church, where he shared his love for singing and became a member of the choir. Damon later joined Safeway, where he excelled in multiple positions and became a valued team member, working alongside many coworkers who loved and respected him. His dedication and commitment led to a fulfilling career, culminating in his retirement in 2022.

Damon's greatest joy was being a father to his five children: his beautiful daughter, Dominique, who blessed him with five grandchildren, Owen, Riley, Sage, Logan, and Amira; and his handsome sons, Damon Jr., DaJon, DaLen, and DaRae.

He is also survived by his mother, Dale; his ten siblings—three sisters, Cheryl, Aleah, and Shelly; and seven brothers, Umbay, Abdullah, Reginald, Andre, Antonio, Jaymell, and Chester. He is also survived by one son-in-law, Breon (Dominique); two sisters-in-law, Keonta (Reginald), and Ameenah (Abdullah) and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Damon is preceded in death by his father, Chester Leroy Russell, and his brother, Devon Russell.

Damon will be greatly missed and forever remembered in the hearts of those he touched and those who loved him. The family wishes to thank everyone who has come to celebrate his homegoing. You all have touched our hearts with the stories and memories that you shared with him.
