Obituary

Sister Constance Celestine Freeman, peacefully transitioned on March 3, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Constance was born on August 28, 1940, in Norfolk, Virginia. She was the third of six children born to the late James and Doretha Johnson. She was educated in the District of Columbia public school system and graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar Senior High School.

Constance married Lewis Freeman, on July 23, 1960. Through their union, seven beautiful children were born (Lora, Linda, Leticia, Lewis Jr., Lance, Joseph, and Alicia). She was a devoted wife, loving mother and matriarch of her family.  During her children's early years, she was a stay-at-home mother, educating and instilling moral values in them. Constance held positions at the United States Postal Service and her culinary skills provided her with opportunities to cook at the American Maritime Officers Service and the Blair House under President Jimmy Carter's Administration.

Constance gave her life to Christ and was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in 1976.

She attended The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostles' Doctrine, until her death. Throughout her years as a good and faithful servant, Sister Freeman was a missionary and head cook of the D.C. Branch Church. She enjoyed traveling and fellowshipping with the saints at other branch churches and conventions.

Sister Freeman was also the co-owner and cook of Learn and Play Daycare Center, from 1979 to 2004, where she was affectionately known as "Grandma."  Sister Freeman was well respected in her community due to her selfless and giving nature. She was always readily available to assist and feed those in need.

Sister Freeman had a love for cooking and was well known for her ability to whip up magic in the kitchen. She never used recipes, because we all know that, "good cooks don't measure!" Sister Freeman also loved preparing and eating crab with her family. She and her brother, June, were the only two who knew the magic ingredients for the deep-fried crab batter that was passed down from their father. She perfected cooking venison and other dishes, including: potato salad, stuffing, fried fish, barbeque ribs, creamed cauliflower, bread pudding and peach cobbler, just to name a few. Sister Freeman was such a good cook, she could season and cook a tree trunk and you would delight in its flavor and tenderness. For this reason, many family members, friends and the community have enjoyed her cooking for many years.

Sister Freeman was loved and will be truly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Minister Lewis Freeman, her parents James and Doretha Johnson, brother James Johnson Jr., son Lance Freeman, and granddaughter Cynthia Stewart. She leaves to cherish her loving memory to her daughters Lora Toney (James), Linda Williams (Curtis), Leticia Bottom (Kelly), and Alicia Campbell (Brian); sons Lewis Freeman Jr. (Michelle) and Joseph Freeman (Audra); twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-two greatgrandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; siblings Albert Johnson, Shirley Thomas (Charles), Walter Johnson, and Penny Smith (Bernard); sisters-in-laws Charlotte Jennings and Camille Johnson, brother-in-law Paul Freeman (Evelyn) and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.
