Carole B. Baraka was born in Newark, New Jersey on June 27, 1943, to her parents Norma and James Saunders. Following World War II, the family moved back to Washington, D.C., where Carole grew up and was a member of the historical Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Georgetown. As an adult, she worked in multiple ministries. In 1961, she graduated as the valedictorian of McKinley High School, then proceeded to Howard University. She married her high school sweetheart, Will Hunt and they were blessed with a daughter Michelle Elaine. The young family moved to Ohio where Carole resumed her educational studies at Central State University in Wilberforce.
In the early 1970s, she returned to Washington, D.C. with her daughter and completed her bachelor's degree at the University of the District of Columbia. Carole worked for the National Geographic Society and the Washington Post before a dedicated career at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing where she would retire. Post retirement, she joined her daughter, Michelle, and her son-in-law Herman Anderson in Georgia.
Carole's legacy lives on through her daughter, Michelle (Herman) Anderson, as well as her four grandchildren: Zakkiyya (James) Cunningham, Michael (Nerissa) Anderson, Taylor (Sierra) Anderson, and Tyler. In addition, she has five great-grandchildren. Devoted cousins K. Joy Peters and Howard (Penny) Wright, in Atlanta. Family and friends in the District, Maryland, and Virginia area remember her warmly, including her first cousin Ronald Jones, as well as Nicole Jones, Denise Hayes, and Laurise Lownes.
The ancestors proudly welcomed Carole B. Baraka on the morning of Tuesday, February 10, 2026. A legacy of grace and love
