Born in Winston Salem, NC, Audrey Lenora (Murray) Johnson was the only child of Lawrence and Evelyn (Green, Murray) Harmon. At around nine years of age, she relocated to Washington, DC where she was raised and educated. She attended Charles Young Elementary School, Hugh M. Browne Junior High School (JH) and Armstrong Senior High School, where she graduated in 1952.
Audrey was "THE MAYOR OF B STREET SE". She knew all the neighbors, what was going on, and even "the drug boys". They all gave her big respect by calling her Mrs. Johnson when they spoke. Mom liked the finer things in life: She had a love for flowers and babies. She enjoyed visiting the National Arboretum, Dumbarton Oaks and Meridan Hill (Malcom X) Park. Audrey was an active member of the JC Naille Elementary School PTA. She encouraged her daughters to study and get a good education. She had two of her girls attend Gordon JH School when busing for better education was offered in DC. Audrey was also an excellent seamstress. She decided to attend a clerical training program in order to get a federal government job. After competion of the training program, she became gainfully employed at the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). In 1994, Audrey retired from her job at the ICC after working 20 years soley for this agency. For a brief period, she worked part-time at Jackie Lee's Lounge (NW Brightwood, DC). Audrey helped family and others, but your name went into the BLACK BOOK if you owed her money. If you took her food from the Shrimp Boat you could get a discount on your debt. She was affectionately called by different names: Ma, Ma Audrey, Grandma Audrey, or Big AJ, even though she was a small lady.
Audrey leaves beautiful memories for her three daughters Simone Dedrick (Cliff), Fabrienne Robinson (Robert), and Angela (Greg) Chisley.
She leaves seven grandchildren who all made her proud: Johnny (Illeana), Eric (Natalie), Kenneth (Irma), Ferguise IV (Talaya), Francis (Carmelita), Robin (Jahmar) and Tia (Tomas)
She was known as Grandma Audrey or GiGi to twenty-two great-great grandchildren and four great-great-great grandchilren.
