Auchise Roastacia Burton was born on February 25, 1958 to Douglas and Aura Nelson at Columbia
Hospital for Women in NW, Washington, DC. She was the second of five children. Educated in the DC
Public School System, Auchise was an alumna of Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School in NW,
Washington, DC. Auchise had worked for the Sheraton Wardman Park Hotel for about 20 years as the
supervisor of their restaurant, Courtyard Cafe, at which time the hotel changed management to
Marriott. She then continued as the supervisor of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel Restaurant, Stones
Throw, for an additional 22 years.
Auchise accepted Christ as a young child and was a faithful servant of God. Her servitude showed in her
charity, generosity, selflessness, love, care, and compassion for others. Auchise was seen as a guardian
angel in human form by many due to her loving spirit. She was looked at as a mother by not only her
two daughters and her son, but also by a host of foster children she took in and others who were
blessed to have crossed her path. Auchise was known to care for, and help, family and strangers alike.
She was known to help the homeless; sometimes even opening her home to the homeless she met on
the street. Auchise's motto was: "Faith over fear", and that is exactly how she lived her life. As a Foster
Care Parent, Auchise took in many hard to place youth, and provided them a stable home life full of
faith, hope, and love. She was awarded several awards by the Foster Care Program for her constant
success with at risk youth.
Auchise enjoyed spending time with her loved ones and attending family functions, big and small. She
also enjoyed cooking, baking, singing, and dancing. Auchise's culinary skills were comparable to that of a
professional chef. She enjoyed teaching her family to cook food from, and for, the soul. Auchise would
frequently be seen, and heard, listening to, and singing along to, gospel music which was her favorite
genre of music.
Auchise was preceded in death by her father, Douglas Sinclair Nelson; her mother, Aura Ruth Nelson-
Slaton; her stepfather, whom she loved as her father, J.C. Slaton; her son, Cochise Carnardo Jackson; her
sister, Arvette Nelson; her grandfather, Lester Moore; her grandmother, Juanita Moore; her aunt, Gloria
Hicks; and her nephew, Randolph Nelson.
When Auchise left this world at 9:41 p.m. on July 1, 2021, she left behind: her husband, Ira "Chuck"; Lee
Burton, Jr. to whom she had been married over twenty-seven years; two daughters, Roastacia Auchise
Aura Jackson and Jamie "Adira Batya"; Ellen Gross-Lee; a son-in-law, Glenn Gross-Lee; her
granddaughters, Diamond Faith Jackson, Dominique Grace Jackson, Destiny Auchise Serenity Gross, and
Jewel Neriah Gross; her grandsons, Deron James Gross, Kavon Victor Jackson, and Jeramiah Ira Lee
Gross; her sisters, Arkina Nelson (David Barone) and Arnibbi Nelson-Nugent; her brother, Bernardo
Nelson (Diane Nelson); her nieces, Chickina Barone (Kelvin James), DeMesha Alford (Arturo Alford),
Vameka Davis (Jonathan Davis) and Tiahna Nugent; her nephews, David Anthony Barone II and Bernardo
Nelson II; her foster daughters, Toy Styles (Charisse Washington), Contina Edwards (Rydell Keys), and a
host of others; her cousins and other family members; her friends; her family of longtime coworkers;
and many others whose lives she had positively impacted.
